Lubbock Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens.  They are enthusiastic, willing to learn, willing to teach, and interested in helping others. Master Gardeners are able to  communicate with diverse groups of people.

What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture.   Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service
designed the volunteer development program and provides the training to increase the  availability of horticultural information and improve the quality of life through horticultural projects. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative extension office to provide horticultural-related information and support to their communities.

Lubbock Master Gardeners Association was organized in 1992.  The organization is a member of the Texas State Master Gardeners Association.

The Master Gardener training course is offered every other year and limited to 30 participants.  Classes are taught by experts in specialized areas. Master Gardener interns are issued a comprehensive three-ring binder filled with material used in the course.

For initial certification, Master Gardeners must complete 50 volunteer hours within one year of the coursework.  To maintain certification, Master Gardeners must complete 12 hours of volunteer or teaching hours and 6 continuing education hours every year.

The next course will begin in February, 2015.  A written
application, a $200 course fee, and a background check are required.  Please call the Extension Office at 806-775-1680 to be placed on the list to receive an application form when it is available.
